Motorcycle Gearing Guide
Final drive ratio is calculated by dividing the rear sprocket tooth count by the front sprocket tooth count. A higher ratio creates shorter gearing, while a lower ratio creates taller gearing.
Smaller Front
Fewer teeth on the front sprocket generally creates shorter gearing and stronger acceleration.
Larger Rear
Adding teeth to the rear sprocket generally creates shorter gearing and raises RPM at the same speed.
Taller Gearing
A larger front sprocket or smaller rear sprocket generally lowers RPM at the same road speed.
⚠️ Important
This calculator compares final drive gearing only. Actual acceleration, top speed, fuel economy, and engine RPM can also be affected by transmission gearing, tire size, engine power, aerodynamics, and riding conditions.
